Albert Karakacha, chairperson of the Matatu Owners Association (MOA), revealed intentions to decrease bus fares nationwide by up to 10 percent. Speaking to The Star on Monday, Karakacha described the fare reduction as a supportive gesture towards Kenyans amid recent fuel price changes.
“We have instructed our members to lower fares to assist the common mwananchi because without them, we can not conduct business. We will be reducing bus fares by approximately five to 10 percent,” he affirmed.
To ensure adherence to the fare adjustment, Karakacha highlighted plans for MOA grassroots leadership to actively monitor the situation.
While acknowledging the government’s fuel price reduction, Karakacha urged authorities to address the persistent high costs of spare parts and tires.
“We appreciate President William Ruto’s efforts, but he should also engage spare parts and tire sellers because they remain expensive,” he insisted.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) recently announced the largest fuel price drop to date. Super petrol decreased by Sh5.31 per liter, diesel by Sh10 per liter, and kerosene by Sh18.68 per liter. Effective from April 14 to May 14, 2024, these adjustments are expected to significantly ease the cost of living nationwide.
