The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released CCTV images of the prime suspect linked to the brutal murder of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni.
Waeni’s lifeless body was discovered on January 14 in a short-term rental apartment in Nairobi’s Roysambu area, gruesomely dismembered with her head missing. A week later, on January 21, her head was found at a dam in Kiambu County.
In a recent statement, the DCI disclosed that extensive forensic examinations have been conducted as the murder investigation progresses into its advanced stages.
“Elaborate forensic analyses have so far been done by the investigating team, capturing the deceased’s last moments and linking probable suspects to her murder,” the DCI stated.
“Further, detailed statements by persons of interest have been recorded, and more data sourced from digital platforms to ensure that all leads to Rita’s killer(s) are utilized.”
Detectives are urgently seeking information regarding the whereabouts of the main suspect, a man seen accompanying Waeni to the scene of her death, as captured by CCTV cameras.
“The Homicide Directorate calls upon anyone who can identify the man whose images (though blurry) appear on this post, to come forward and share information that may assist in his arrest,” urged the DCI.
According to the investigative agency, the suspect initiated contact with Waeni on October 2, 2023, using an Instagram account under the name Carlton Maina. The account underwent multiple name changes before being deactivated immediately after Waeni’s murder.
It is believed that the suspect frequented various hotels in Nairobi West in October 2023 and visited the Roysambu short-term rental apartment on TRM Drive on November 7 and November 11, 2023.
“He is also believed to have a criminal mind evidenced by his way of evading CCTV cameras. He is fluent in Swahili and English and has knowledge of Nairobi and its environs,” the statement added.
Despite the tragic loss, Waeni was laid to rest in a private ceremony on February 5.
The Makadara Law Court released two Nigerian nationals, William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbour, who had been initially detained in connection to the murder. While they were freed on February 15, the court directed them to appear before investigators once a week as the investigation continues.
