Veteran journalist Rita Tinina, was on Wednesday March 27 laid to rest at her Noosupeni farm Olokirikirai, in Narok County. And this is just a day before her 46th birthday.
The journalist was found dead on Sunday, March 22, at her Kileleshwa home. An autopsy revealed severe pneumonia as the cause of death.
Rita Tinina’s final journey started at 7AM when friends and family gathered to view and retrieve her body from Umash Funeral home in Nakuru.
Her body was transported to Narok in a Range Rover- a decision made by her close friends, known as the Rita’s Girls Club.
According to Duncan Khaemba, chairman of the burial committee and an NTV journalist, Tinina and her friends had planned a road trip together to celebrate her 46th birthday. Unfortunately, her demise disrupted these plans.
Touchingly, her friends decided to honor her memory by fulfilling their part of the plan, hiring a Range Rover hearse to carry her casket on her final journey from the mortuary to her home in Narok.
“Rita’s girls club (Judy, QZ, Njambi and Njeri) were to take a road trip together with Rita in a Range Rover during her leave. They have requested the family to allow them to fulfil that part of the deal so they will do that final road trip with Rita,”
Duncan Khaemba stated.
The black Range Rover hearse was adorned with a v-shaped wreath of flowers in the front and its wings lifted, displaying Rira’s casket. The shape of the lifted wings was akin to a bird flying free. The hearse was surrounded by friends paying their respects.
Later, they changed to a Mercedes Benz hearse when the first vehicle reportedly broke down.
Rita Tinina Buried
Rita’s burial was attended by politicians, family, and friends. Journalists from the Nation Media Group (NMG), The Standard and Royal Media services (RMS) also attended.
Notable figures in attendance included NMG Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo, RMS Editorial Director Linus Kaikai, and NMG Group Managing Editor Pamella Sittoni.
Senators Ledama Ole Kina (Narok) and Enoch Wambua (Kitui) along with several Narok MCAs were also in atendance.
State House Press Secretary Emmanuel Talam, Dennis Itumbi, and Narok North MP Agnes Pareiyo were also present.
Her final send-off was a testament to the impact she had on the lives of those who knew her. Many of those remembered her as an embodiment of honesty, integrity, and optimism.
Mr. Talam, speaking for the President, hailed Rita Tinina as an exceptional journalist who elevated her stories with depth and meaning. Her TV reporting skillfully portrayed narratives beyond personal accounts, showcasing both victories and hardships.
Rita is survived by daughter Mia Malaikah, 8, and partner Robert Nagila.
Rita Tinina’s legacy lives on, remembered fondly by her loved ones, colleagues, and the journalism community at large.
