On March 27, a Moi University bus met with an accident at Kimende along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway. The bus, carrying 50 third and fourth-year Kiswahili students on a trip to Mombasa, tipped over, causing chaos as students struggled to exit through shattered windows.
Preliminary findings indicate that the bus driver attempted to avoid a recklessly driven vehicle, but lost control while returning to the road. The result was drastic, with the bus veering off the highway and landing in a nearby ditch.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but 12 students suffered injuries. Law enforcement swiftly responded to oversee rescue efforts and manage the traffic congestion caused by the incident.
This Moi University Bus accident echoes memories of recent tragedies, notably the Kenyatta University (KU) bus accident just nine days prior, which claimed the lives of 11 students and left 47 others injured.
Road Accidents a National Tragedy
Road accidents remain a major concern in Kenya, with 1,926 road crashes resulting in 763 deaths reported between January and February 2024. In 2023, there were 3,900 fatalities reported, and in 2022, there were 4,650 fatalities reported on Kenyan roads.
Drunk driving and motorcycle accidents are the primary contributors to these fatalities.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared traffic accidents in Kenya a national catastrophe, emphasizing the urgent need for strict enforcement of traffic laws.
He stated, “Traffic accidents are a National catastrophe that must be dealt with as a priority through strict enforcement of traffic laws.”
To address this, on March 21, the Interior Cabinet Secretary announced that the Kenya Police Traffic Department and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) have implemented measures to arrest and prosecute unlawful drivers.
Efforts to curb drunk driving are on the rise, while licensing regulations for public vehicles are being strictly enforced. Additionally, road safety measures such as speed cameras are being improved.
Furthermore, steps are being taken to combat corruption among traffic officers, with strict penalties for both offenders and those offering bribes.
