Kenya’s doctors, represented by the KMPDU, have rejected a Ksh.2.4 billion offer from the government to end the strike.

On Tuesday, the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei stated that the Sh2.4 billion would facilitate the deployment of all eligible medical student interns, who can collect their letters from Thursday.

He also mentioned that eligible medical workers would receive funds for further education.

Despite claims of settling salary arrears and promises of recruitments, doctors remain unconvinced, citing persistent grievances such as inadequate remuneration and unfulfilled promises.

The union swiftly dismissed the offer, citing the government’s failure to honor previous agreements, particularly the 2017-21 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

KMPDU chairperson Abi Mwachi stated, “The doctors believed in the government’s promise in 2017, ending a 100-day strike. It’s time to honor that promise.”

Mwachi reiterated, “We decline these proposals entirely. Genuine governments should honor CBAs.”

KPMDU SG Davji Bhimji Atellah, who termed the government’s offer as impunity, said the strike is gaining momentum as they advocate for a healthcare system that is fair and just.

He added, “We refuse to tolerate impunity! With unwavering determination, our resolve surges. United in purpose, our strike gains momentum, intensifying tenfold as we advance towards a healthcare system rooted in fairness and justice.”

Since the strike began on March 14, disruptions to health services nationwide have been severe. With over 7,000 members represented, the impact of this industrial action has further strained healthcare infrastructure.

Doctors and the government need to find a fair solution quickly to protect both healthcare and citizens’ well-being.
