Kenyan telecommunications giant Safaricom has launched The Connect Academy, a program aimed at providing industrial training for fiber optic technicians.
Safaricom’s chief consumer business officer, Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, announced this initiative during the Connected Africa Summit 2024, showing Safaricom’s dedication to improving fiber optic infrastructure in Kenya and Ethiopia
The Connect Academy is part of the Presidential DigiTalent Programme, which involves both government and private sector collaboration. It concentrates on skill development, ICT innovations, training, certification, and mentorship.
Safaricom works with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) to train top-notch broadband connectivity professionals.

The Connect Academy is expected to kick off with an initial cohort of 200 participants in May.
“We intend to have the first cohort of 200 begin in May,” Ali-Kimanthi stated.
The Connect Academy’s overarching objective is to address the technology industry’s skills gap by training 10,000 fiber optic technicians over a span of five years.
Through this initiative, Safaricom aims to contribute to the job market and development a highly skilled telecommunications workforce.
