President William Ruto has unveiled a substantial increase in compensation for victims of human-wildlife conflict during the launch of a compensation scheme in Rumuruti.
He emphasized law changes that boosted compensation from KSh 200,000 to KSh 5 million for victims of fatal attacks.
Additionally, Ruto outlined survivors of wildlife attacks, will be compensated between KSh 2 million and KSh 4 million based on injury severity. He reiterated the government’ commitment to addressing human-wildlife conflict, ensuring equitable compensation for all affected individuals.
At the launch event, President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s dedication to resolving human-wildlife conflict, emphasizing the importance of coexistence between communities and wildlife for tourism enhancement.
During the commissioning of the Lariak Forest Wildlife Electric Fence and the launch of the Human-Wildlife Conflict Compensation Scheme in Rumuruti, Ruto disclosed the government’s plan to escalate compensation for victims of wildlife attacks. He clarified that the constitutional amendment would ensure victims receive appropriate compensation, elevating the amount to KSh 5 million from KSh 200,000.
“We have now changed the law. Previously, if someone was killed by an elephant, they were paid KSh 200,000. We have stated that as the government, if a citizen is killed by an elephant or any other animal, we will pay them KSh 5 million,” President Ruto asserted.
Furthermore, he detailed the compensation system for survivors of animal attacks, stating that the government would adjust compensation based on injury severity. “Some will receive KSh 3 million, others KSh 2 million, and for more severe injuries, we will increase it to KSh 4 million. As long as you remain in the area, we will support you,” he added.
President Ruto’s announcement marks a significant stride in addressing the challenges of human-wildlife conflict. The heightened compensation aims to provide enhanced support to victims and survivors, ensuring their well-being and fostering peaceful coexistence between communities and wildlife.
