Former Riruta Ward MCA Samuel Ndung’u Njoroge, convicted in the murder of his ex-wife alongside two others, has been handed a 30-year prison sentence.
Kiambu High Court Judge Joel Ngugi delivered the verdict on Friday, also sentencing Njoroge’s co-accused, Joyce Njambi Mungai and Wilson Mwangi Munyua, for their roles in the brutal killing of Lucy Njambi Nyagiko.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) released a statement detailing the judge’s remarks during the sentencing.
Judge Ngugi described the offense as “sadistic” and emphasized the brutality of the act, stating, “The accused persons brutally murdered the deceased Lucy Njambi Nyagiko.”
Further quoting the judge, the ODPP stated, “The act of the accused persons was an extreme act of domestic violence and femicide carried out in the most brutish and sadistic ways.”
Lucy Njambi died on January 26, 2018, while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital after being raped and doused with sulfuric acid by individuals who abducted her from her residence in Thindigua along Kiambu Road on January 24. The autopsy revealed that her killers also made her swallow the corrosive acid.
The mother of one was laid to rest at her parents’ home in Karembu village, Gatundu South constituency.
During the trial earlier this month, Judge Ngugi referred to Njoroge’s history of aggression and assault cases, leading to his conclusion that marital discord was the motive behind the crime.
Regarding the involvement of the second and third accused, the judge stated, “Their involvement, which placed them at the crime scene, solidified the case.”
Joyce Njambi Mungai was identified as the individual who purchased the sulfuric acid used in the attack, while Wilson Mwangi Munyua’s presence during the crime was established through mobile phone data records.
