Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi, a high-ranking official in the Nairobi County Assembly, has ignited a firestorm of criticism after a video surfaced showing him seemingly pressuring his female Muslim colleague to shake his hand and hug him during an office birthday celebration.
In the video Ng’ondi can be seen moving amidst birthday wishes from his colleagues, most of whom are singing “Happy Birthday” to him. He then approaches his female colleague, urging her to stand up and shake his hand properly.
“Leo unisalimie na birthday!” he says, stretching his hand towards her. “Ni birthday yangu…”
At this point, the woman appears visibly flustered, reluctant to stand up and engage with Ng’ondi. Despite her unease, she eventually complies, succumbing to the pressure.
The video, shared widely on social media and brought to public attention by blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, sparked immediate outrage, with many condemning Ng’ondi for disregarding the woman’s autonomy and consent.
The video sparked outrage from Kenyans who questioned why such behavior was tolerated from someone in Ng’ondi’s position. He also called for accountability and condemned the act as an abuse of power.
The Association of Muslim Lawyers demanded accountability and immediate action against Ng’ondi, stressing the seriousness of his actions and how they infringed on the woman’s rights and religious beliefs.
“We therefore urgently demand accountability and the immediate commencement of criminal proceedings by the DCI against Hon. Ken Ng’ondi for this egregious act of sexual harassment,” the association stated.
Jamia Mosque’s Sheikh Jamaludin Osman criticized Nairobi County Speaker for sexual harassment of the Muslim Woman, and promised continued accountability efforts.
Azimio’s Ng’ondi, however, dismissed the video as a political smear campaign, asserting that his intentions were misunderstood.
