The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General, Davji Atellah, criticized Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria for his stance on not paying medical interns KSh 206,000.

KPMDU Secretary General Davji Atellah

Atellah slammed Kuria’s claim that the government only has funds for doctors, not students, calling it unacceptable.

“No matter how big you think you are, you are just a little spark, ignorance is not a virtue,” Atellah said.

CS Moses Kuria, speaking on KTN News over the ongoing doctors strike, dismissed the idea of medical interns earning a higher salary, terming it unrealistic and impractical.

He asserted that he would not pay the proposed amount, emphasizing his authority in the matter as long as he remains in office.

“I will not pay KSh 206,000, I will not pay. Take it from me. As long as the minister for public service service, nothing of that sort will happen,” Kuria stated.

Kuria further argued that paying interns more would be unfair to other professionals in the job market, such as engineers, and criticized the work ethic of striking medical interns.

“You want me to pay that to people who have been on strike, who only work for two hours and go and work for private clinics,” he added.

Meanwhile, Transzoia Governor George Natembeya threatened to hire doctors from Uganda if Kenyan doctors refused to return to work, stating that he could easily find replacements from neighboring countries.

Natembeya’s remarks came amidst ongoing tensions between medical practitioners and the government over salary disputes and working conditions.
