Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro is nursing a wounded heart and pride after his alleged sidechick Loise Makena, 30, left him high and dry. She also reportedly made away with a staggering Sh200 million and multiple properties that the governor had registered in her name.
Despite being married to a mzungu wife, Governor Mung’aro could not resist his wandering eye, which settled on Loise Makena. They began a clandestine affair that lasted for three years.
Makena, a surveyor, first met Mung’aro during his tenure as Cabinet Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Lands. Her charm and intelligence lured him into a whirlwind romance.
Beyond their love, Governor Mung’aro and Makena delved into corruption, setting up proxy companies to siphon millions from county coffers under the guise of consultancy services.
Makena did business with Kilifi County on behalf of the governor using companies like Landale Builders Limited, Radeny Holdings Limited, Waymark Supplies, and Marie Company Ltd.
When Mung’aro eyed the Kilifi seat, Makena became his right-hand woman, managing funds and campaigns. He trusted her implicitly, unaware of her ulterior motives.
Makena’s influence grew, with properties worth millions, including beachfront properties acquired and registered under her name, courtesy of Mung’aro’s generosity and devotion.
However, behind the scenes, a conniving Makena was plotting to escape. She got help from her friend Kinoti, who doubled as her errand boy, helping her secure work from the Governor.
Over time, Kinoti’s life changed dramatically. In September 2022, he did not have much, but by January 2024, he bought a new Land Rover Discovery worth about Ksh. 6.8 million. Unsurprising, considering he was the accomplice of Governor Mung’aro’s girlfriend.
With their plan in place, Loise Makena up and left with the 200M and numerous properties under her name, leaving the Governor heartbroken and in disbelief.
Their fallout shattered Mung’aro’s trust and jeopardized his political future. As news of the scandal spread, some MCAs felt the governor deserved Makena’s betrayal due to his misplaced trust.
Attempts at reconciliation have failed, leaving Governor Mung’aro grappling with betrayal as Makena remains elusive, presumably enjoying her ill-gotten gains.
