Tanzanian singer Christina Shusho has sparked excitement among Kenyan fans with the announcement of her upcoming song titled “Zakayo.”
The revelation of Shusho‘s latest project has stirred a frenzy on social media, with Kenyans eagerly anticipating its release.
Shusho’s Kenyan fans have taken to various social platforms to express their excitement, with some even creating memes centered around the highly awaited song.
Emmanuel Gona’s tweeted, “It is already trending in Kenya, Zakayo,”
Elvis Korir also chimed in, saying, “This is an instant hit. Zakayo and his chronicles are about to go global. We need an English version of this name.”
Linda Oguttu aka Mtu ya Mjengo wrote, “Wacha tu nicheke because Kenyans will have a ball with this one.”
The title of the song has sparked discussions, with some linking it to current events, particularly discussions surrounding taxation in Kenya and a nickname associated with President William Ruto.
President Ruto addressed the nickname during a visit to Tokyo in February 2024, stating, “I do not mind people calling me names. I will continue to do the right thing for our country irrespective of the names people call me, including Zakayo.”
The nickname “Zakayo” first surfaced on social media platforms in May 2023 in connection with new tax proposals by the Ruto-led administration. It draws parallels to Zacchaeus, a tax collector in the Bible, who climbed a Sycamore tree to see Jesus, and is disliked by the Jews for keeping their money for himself.
Ruto emphasized his commitment to addressing criticism on taxes rather than letting the country sink into debt. And that he is prioritizing job creation with projects like the Affordable Housing Scheme.
Ruto expressed his willingness to embrace the nickname, stating, “Heri mimi nikuwe ‘Zakayo’ lakini hawa vijana wapate ajira, heri niitwe ‘Zakayo’ na Kenya issingie kwa madeni” (I do not mind being called ‘Zakayo’ if it means the youth get jobs and Kenya avoids debt).
