Kenyan media personality Betty Kyalo has expressed her frustrations after her salon, FlairbyBetty, in Kilimani was put up for auction due to pending rent arrears.
In a public notice published in the dailies, Keysian Auctioneers announced that items from the salon would be up for public auction on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. The auction will be held at Leakey’s Storage Limited on Lunga-Lunga Road in Nairobi.
The news spread rapidly, sparking a flurry of calls and texts.
In a statement on Instagram, Betty Kyalo explained that running the business had become difficult due to the high rent.
“Running a business in Kenya has become so difficult,” Kyalo lamented. “Landlords don’t want to reduce rent, and it becomes a huge burden on businesses that are struggling because of the economic slowdown.”
The mother of one stated that she closed the salon because she valued her happiness and peace of mind over maintaining its reputation.
She wrote, “I let it go. I am happier. I sleep better. My peace of mind is more important than a name. I’m good.”
Despite the setback, Betty Kyalo promptly announced the reopening of her barbershop within two months.
“After 2 months of expansion, we reopen Aftershave by Flair in Upperhill, La Baita,” Betty Kyalo stated on Instagram.
Other than FlairbyBetty and Aftershave AtershavebyfFair, the Reality TV star also owns a make up brand named Unapologetic Africa.
Among the listed items up for auction are: 3 dismantled well shelves, a massage bed stand, 2 massage beds, a small serve rack, a glass shelf, 4 big mirrors, towel warmers and dressing tables.
Also listed are: a coat hanger and broken seat, a Ramtons One Door Fridge,5 Pcs Foot Massagers, 6 Pcs Driers, 8 Pcs Wall Hanging, 12 Pcs Barber Seats, Sony and Vitrion TVs.
