A man accused of blackmailing Kakamega Governor Fernandes Odinga Barasa for Ksh240 Million by threatening to reveal his nude photos has been charged,
William Simiyu Matere, alias Elijah, aged 35, was arraigned at the Kibera Law Court on Wednesday March 20, 2024. He allegedly committed the crime between December 2023 and March 18, 2024.
The suspect said he took the naked pictures when the governor sought help from a witch doctor to win the 2022 elections. And that the governor was asked to undress during the ritual.
Simiyu initially asked Governor Fernandes Barasa to pay him Ksh270 million to not release the nudes but later lowered the amount to Ksh240 million.
Reportedly, the governor paid Simiyu Ksh100 million. But when the threats became too much, the governor sought the help of authorities.
Kakamega Governor Nudes Blackmail
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) promptly apprehended Simiyu, detaining him at Kilimani police station before bringing him to court.
Simiyu pleaded not guilty to two counts- conspiracy to commit a felony and demanding property with threats.
During the hearing, Simiyu asked for fair bail conditions due to his financial situation and promised to follow any rules if released.
Although the prosecution did not object to bail, they asked for strict conditions considering the seriousness of the crime.
Chief Magistrate Ann Mwangi granted Simiyu release on a Ksh2 million bond, with a surety of the same amount. The case will be mentioned in two weeks for a pre-trial hearing, continuing the legal process.
