Jowie’s mother has asserted that she believes her son is innocent after he was sentenced to death for the 2018 murder of Monica Kimani. She was speaking to journalists outside the Milimani Law Courts after Lady Justice Grace Nzioka pronounced the death penalty.
Jowie‘s mother said, “I believe my son is innocent, he has not done any wrong and has not killed anyone. I believe there is a God of a second chance who will make him get out of prison,”
The short-haired lady who has resiliently stood by Jowie’s side throughout his highly publicized court appearances likened her son’s plight to that of Joseph from the Bible. And who who was falsely imprisoned but then released. Similarly, she believes her son, also named after the biblical Joseph, will be set free one day.
“My son Jowie is like Joseph in the bible who suffered but God helped him. He will be released, that is why I still have the strength and believe that my son will be released from prison when the right time comes.”
She said.
Jowie’s Lawyer Speaks
While addressing journalists after Jowie was sentenced to death, his lawyer stated that the defense team were unsurprised by the harsh sentence as they were prepared. He said, “We were expecting something close to the sentence so we are not shocked.”
Jowie’s lawyer, however, finds the death sentence awarded to be unfair, expressing his belief that Lady Justice Grace Nzioka was influenced by the audience and the court of public opinion.
“We affirm our belief that throughout the entire court process, Lady Justice Grace Nzioka, respectfully, was playing to the gallery and aiming to placate public opinion. We are adamant that the court judgment differs significantly from the written judgment,”
He said.
The lawyer also claimed that Jowie is innocent of his murder conviction.
And he announced plans to appeal the sentencing at the Court of Appeal. He stated, “Jowie is innocent and at the Court of Appeal, we will be vindicated. The notice of appeal is ready and we are waiting to discuss before filing.”
If the Court of Appeal upholds Jowie’s death sentence, then he will go to jail for the rest of his life, that is, until he dies.
