Convicted killer Joseph ‘Jowie’ Irungu, through his advocate Andrew Muge has filed a notice of appeal against his conviction and death sentence in the Monica Kimani murder case.
On February 9, the Court found Jowie guilty of murdering Monica Kimani in 2018, at her Lamuria Gardens Apartment. And on March 13, Lady Justie Grace Nzioka sentenced Jowie to death– the maximum sentence for murder.
“Take notice that Joseph Kuria Irungu Alias Jowie appeals to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the Honorable Lady Justice Grace Nzioka delivered in open court at Milimani, Nairobi on the 9th day February 2024 and in her written judgment dated 9th February 2024 whereby the Appellant was convicted of Murder and sentenced to death on 13th March, 2024. The appeal is against the conviction and sentence,”
The notice statement filed by Jowie through his advocate Andrew Muge read.
Notably, Jowie intends to be present at the hearing of the appeal for his murder conviction and death sentence.
Jowie Files Notice of Appeal
Earlier, Advocate Andrew Muge expressed that the death sentence was expected and that they were ready to appeal. Lady Justice Grace Nzioka ruled, “I have ordered that the first accused person, Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie, shall suffer death for the offence of murder under section 204 of the Penal Code of Kenya,”
However, the lawyer as well as Jowie’s mother still insist that Jowie is innocent.
In the appeal process, the court holds the authority to overturn the original decision, mandate a retrial, affirm the initial verdict, or issue a new sentence based on its own judgment.
