Sharon Kosgey, 24, the lone survivor of the car accident on February 11 that resulted in the fatalities of marathoner Kelvin Kiptum, 24, and his coach Garvis Hakizimana, gave a police statement on Wednesday, February 21, detailing the events leading to the crash.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Commander Peter Mulinge noted that, according to Sharon Kosgey’s account, Kelvin Kiptum was driving and swerved off the road. Upon realizing this, he panicked and accelerated instead of hitting the brakes. The Toyota Premio lost control, veered into a ditch and hit a tree.

The police told KTN News.
An NTSA report on the vehicle involved in the accident confirmed its mechanical soundness with no pre-accident defects on brakes, headlights, and fog lights. The report also disclosed the vehicle was on high speed at the time of the accident. And the accident scene was not foggy.
How Kelvin Kiptum Spent Last Day
DCI investigators, led by Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto, meticulously reconstructed the timeline of events leading to the fatal accident. The athlete, accompanied by Garvis Hakizimana and a woman identified as Sharon Kosgey, visited three establishments on the fateful day.
Initially, Kelvin Kiptum and his companions patronized the Talex Inn along the Iten-Eldoret road. He then proceeded to The Well Irish Pub at Rupa Mall. The pub supervisor, Jeremy Kipkorir, mentioned that Kiptum arrived at 6:36 PM and departed at 8:58 PM.
The trio then traveled 14 kilometers to The Grand Miarmir Guest House in Annex. Security checkpoints confirmed their arrival at 9:12 p.m. Here, they shared a meal, with Kiptum choosing his preferred dish of meat and boiled bananas.
Kiptum settled the bill via mobile money at 10:16 PM. The trio departed The Grand Miarmir Guest House around 10:25 p.m., heading towards the training base in Chepkorio, Elgeyo Marakwet, unaware of the fate awaiting them. The car accident occurred at Flax Junction, approximately 36 kilometers from their last known location. Kelvin Kiptum and Coach Garvis Hakizimana passed away at the scene.
