Kenyan Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge is mourning the tragic passing on of the current Marathon World Record holder Kelvin Kiptum. The 24-year-old Kiptum, and his Rwandan coach Garvis Hakizimana, 36, passed away in a road accident on Sunday evening around 11 pm. The vehicle they were traveling in, a Toyota Premio, lost control, veered into a ditch, and hit a tree. Both Kiptum and Hakizimana died on the spot, while a third passenger survived with serious injuries. The accident occurred in Eldoret town.
Eliud Kipchoge took to X and expressed deep sorrow over the twenty-four-year-old’s death as he offered heartfelt condolences to Eliud Kiptum’s young family, acknowledging the loss of a rising star with immense potential. He hoped for God’s comfort during this challenging time.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of the Marathon World Record holder and rising star Kelvin Kiptum. An athlete who had a whole life ahead of him to achieve incredible greatness. I offer my deepest condolences to his young family. May God comfort you during this trying time.”

Kelvin Kiptum Shining Legacy
Kelvin Kiptum leaves the legacy of being the only person in the world to complete a marathon in under two hours and one minute- clocking 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon of October 2023 to break the world record of Eliud Kipchoge of 2:01:09. He also ran three of the seven fastest marathons in history having won the December 2022 Valencia marathon and the 2023 London Marathon. His death comes just a few days following the official recognition of Kiptum’s marathon record by World Athletics.
Kelvin Kiptum has passed on at the peak of his career. He was scheduled to kick off his season at the Rotterdam Marathon in April. Additionally, the 24-year-old current World Marathon record holder and his predecessor Eliud Kipchoge were set to face off in the Paris Olympics.
