ODM’s National Executive Committee met on September 6, 2023, to deliberate upon a number of issues, key among them being the conduct of some of the party’s members.
ODM expelled five Members of Parliament (MPs) as it cracked the whip on defectors.
Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Felix Odiwuor, alias Jalang’o (Langata), and Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda have been kicked out of the party.
Reasons why
The party said the resolution was arrived at during a National Executive Committee of the party held on Wednesday under the leadership of Party leader Raila Odinga.
ODM Chairman John Mbadi said the MPs had openly associated with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza Party.
He added that the expelled MPs had also opposed lawful decisions and resolutions made by the party, contrary to Article 11 of the ODM constitution.
The ODM party is thus directed to commence their removal from the party register.
“The members are deemed to have resigned from the ODM, and the party is hereby directed to commence the process of removing them from the register of ODM,” Mbadi said.
Jalangoo reacts
Moments after he was expelled from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party, Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor aka Jalang’o sought comfort from the Bible. He also added a picture of him carrying a box full of ODM’s petitions.
Quoting a verse from the Holy Book, Jalang’o was optimistic that this too shall pass as he ponders his next political move.
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it,” he wrote.
