John Matara was in early February charged with the murder of Socialite Starlet Wahu before Milimani High Court Judge Kanyi Kimondo where he pled not guilty.
Starlet Wahu was discovered deceased on January 3, inside Papino Apartments on the fourth floor in South B. Wahu, Pastor Kanyari’s sister, had checked into the Airbnb with John Matara for a romantic getaway, but things took a dark and tragic turn.
Postmortem results indicated strangulation and severe stab wounds to her right thigh and head, leading to significant blood loss as the causes of her death. Makadara Police Boss Judith Nyongesa said, “The suspect cut the woman’s vein that connects to the heart, which is why she died fast. We could not have saved her,”
A security guard noticed John Matara, injured and wearing bloody clothes, leaving the premises the next day and raised the alarm. Rushing to the scene, property owner Florene Ngina discovered Wahu’s body lying in a pool of blood. And the scene showed signs of a struggle. She alerted the police, who found HIV testing kits, used condoms, bhang, alcohol, and a blood-stained kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon.
John Matara, who had fled, was later caught at Mbagathi Hospital seeking treatment for injuries sustained during the incident. He claimed self-defense, stating Starlet Wahu had attacked him.
Pastor Kanyari Speaks on Starlet Wahu’s Death
Pastor Kanyari revealed that on the fateful night, his sister Starlet Wahu unsuccessfully attempted to call him at 2 AM. Apparently, it was a distress call as the suspect was trying to extort money from Wahu. And when this failed, he stabbed her to death.
Which loosely translates to, “At around eight in the evening, my sister called me, but I didn’t answer. So, at nine, she started feeling threatened by that man. He demanded Sh500,000 from her, telling her to call our people to send the money. He hijacked her, and my sister resisted. The man then stabbed her in the neck and leg.”
Pastor Kanyari also shared that Starlet Wahu had not introduced John Matara to the family. He said, “We had not seen the man before. We learned about him after her death.
A grieving Pastor Kanyari shared that he was heartbroken by Starlet Wahu’s death since “she was doing so well in life.”
The siblings had last spent time together “on Christmas, and on December 31.”
Pastor Kanyari expressed that Starlet Wahu’s death “is so tragic for us, the family, and even her friends. May her soul rest in peace.”
Wahu was laid to rest on Saturday, January 6, at a lowkey ceremony at her parents’ farm in Kamulu, Nairobi County.
