Tragedy struck the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) after a first-year Computer Science student committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of Ndovu hostel at around 8PM on Saturday night.
The student, identified as Michael Muoki Mutisya, was reportedly depressed after missing government funding. He was also disappointed after failing to secure a scholarship to study in the United States.
A distress call prompted the student’s father, Joseph Muoki Nzau, to visit his son at school. The grieving parent revealed that he had a conversation with his son before the incident.
Nzau recounted that after their talk, his son went to retrieve some items from his room but never returned.
The distraught father expressed disbelief, stating, “Imagine we talked at length with him.” But he failed to come back; he threw himself from the fourth floor.”
Despite doctors’ efforts at JKUAT Hospital, Muoki could not be saved, and he was declared dead at the university hospital on Saturday evening.
The student association secretary, Timothy Gitonga, announced the devastating news, urging prayers for the grieving family and the university community.
Gitonga stated, “It is on a sad note I have to announce the death of one of our students. Let’s pray for the family. It is a sad day for us.”
The deceased’s body has been transferred to Thika Level 5 Hospital morgue for further processing.
