Blogger Peris Mugera, hailing from Tharaka Nithi County, was discovered dead just months after her employer, politician Felix Gitari Mbiuki, died mysteriously.
Authorities confirmed that Mugera, 40, was found dead in Kirinyaga on the roadside along the Makutano-Sagana Highway with apparent forehead injuries.
Peris Mugera went missing on February 29, 2024, after informing her two daughters aged six and fifteen that she was meeting a friend before heading to work. However, she never returned. Her children raised an alarm, leading her family and friends to file a missing person report at Chuka police station on March 1.
The search ended tragically on March 4 when she was found dead. Family members positively identified her body on March 8.
Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner, Wesley Koech, addressed the media, urging calm as investigations into Mugera’s death unfold. He stated, “We cannot tell the cause of her death at the moment, but investigations are still ongoing.”
The police reckon that “Mugera must have been killed between when she left her house and Monday morning when her body was discovered.”
The police stated that her mobile phone signal was last registered on Friday, March 2, at 2 am in Kathoge, Kirinyaga County, before being turned off.
She last posted on February 23 afternoon, complaining that her body needed a break. “My body aches, yaani nyama za mwili zinauma. Nani ako na dawa?”

Peris Mugera’s disappearance and subsequent death bear an eerie resemblance to that of her late employer, Gitari Mbiuki. She used to plan campaigns for Felix Gitari Mbiuki, who ran for Tharaka Nithi governor. Mbiuki, a former Machakos County Assembly clerk, was found dead on July 18, 2023, in his car in Embu. The cause of his death was a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
But, Mr Koech is unconvinced. He said “We cannot say that there is high insecurity in Tharaka Nithi County because this is an isolated case.”
Questions Arising
Peris Mugera’s heavy political involvement raises questions about the circumstances surrounding her death. According to Daniel Muthomi of the Tharaka Nithi Bloggers Association, Mugera was a well-connected ground mobilizer with a significant role in local politics.
After the discovery of Mugera’s body with apparent signs of violence, residents have raised concerns about the safety of political figures and those associated with them in the region. Not too long ago, Meru blogger Sniper was also found dead.
