President William Ruto on Sunday said that Kibera slums will be non-existent in the next ten years due to the affordable housing program.

Speaking at a church service in Nairobi’s Langata area, the head of state said that the affordable housing project that is currently being rolled out, will face out the slums to give Kenyans a modest living.

“We are removing people from the slums. Kibera and all the other slums within Nairobi will not be there in 10 years. We will change it into an estate,” he said.

Ruto further stated that the huge number of Kenyans still living in slums should be a huge concern to the country, calling on those opposed to the housing project to appreciate its long term objectives.

Currently, more than 6.5 million Kenyans live in slums spread across the country.

According to Ruto, the aim of the Housing Project is to remove people from slums and shift them to respectable living spaces.

“The housing project only has two aims, It’s not just to build more houses but to create more employment opportunities,” he said.

That is why we really pushed on the housing fund. People complained about it but they will later come to realize that it is a very good thing.”

He affirmed that the project where the government seeks to construct 200,000 houses in the next five years, will create jobs for the youths.

“It will help youths get jobs, Kenyans will get houses and live in respectable places where there is water, electricity and roads. As for now we have about 6 million Kenyans living in slums and we must be concerned about them,” he said.
