Dagoreti North MP Beatrice Elachi defended the officers who were captured in a viral clip loading gas cylinders into a police car. The video, taken during the recent Azimio la Umoja demonstrations, and available on BNN PREMIUM, sparked a discussion online.

Netizens had raised questions about why the law enforcement officers were handling gas cylinders while property theft and business break-ins occurred during the protests.

However, MP Elachi clarified that the officers were evacuating the cylinders to a safer location due to the presence of hooligans.

Elachi speaks

The MP spoke on Friday during an interview with K24.

They took the gas cylinders and placed them in their car to protect them. Later on, they returned the cylinders to their rightful owner,” Ms. Elachi stated.

Though she recognised that indeed there are instances when police engage in criminal activities, in this particular scenario, Elachi said the police were out to do what is honorable.

“The police have already returned the gas cylinders to the owner,” Elachi said.

Further, Elachi said the police are not just Kenya Kwanza supporters as they are picked from all the 290 constituencies in the country.

Police are recruited from 290 constituencies. So, it means they are from both factions of the political divide. They go through the same challenges we go through,” she said.
